As the 550 spyder was ultimately designed as a race car, there were many variants in the design both enhanced by the Porsche Factory or the individual racing drivers and team owners after the spyder had left the showroom floors of their global network of dealerships. A number of these spyders created historical moments in motor racing, from the pioneering in body aerodynamics with the addition of ‘wings’ or ‘buckels’ through to drivers who risked it all for a win for the new up and coming sports automotive brand, Porsche.
