Race day

The 550 spyder dominated at all the Formula One tracks throughout Europe in the early 1950s from Nurburgring and Le Mans, to the Targa Florio and Berlin’s Avus. With the opportunity to race on international circuits such as in the Carrera Panamericana, Buenos Aires and Venezuelan GP in Caracas, Porsche had proven to be successful and consistent on all the tracks. With spyders being exported for the US market, it wasn’t long before they appeared on the starting line at tracks like Pebble Beach, Sebring, Pomona and Cumberland, once again seen as a main threat for the class competition.
